Once the mainstream - SDRAM
Synchronous DRAM(SDRAM) is the Synchronous dynamic ram.
SDRAM memory strips have gold fingers on both sides, which are inserted directly into the slot of the memory strip. Therefore, this structure is also known as "double-in-line", which is called "DIMM" in English.
At present, most memory chips adopt this "DIMM" structure.
With the continuous improvement of processor front-end bus, SDRAM has been unable to meet the needs of new processors and has long been out of the mainstream market.
Today's mainstream - DDR SDRAM
DDR SDRAM(DDR for short) is a SDRAM that adopts the technology of DDR(Double Data Rate SDRAM). Compared with ordinary SDRAM, DDR SDRAM can transmit Data twice in the same clock cycle, while SDRAM can only transmit Data once.
DDR memory chips are not so different from SDRAM in appearance, they have the same length and the same pin distance.
It's just that the DDR memory strip has 184 pins and only one gap in goldfinger, while the SDRAM memory strip has 168 pins and two gaps.
According to the working frequency of DDR memory stick, it is divided into DDR200, DDR266, DDR333, DDR400 and other types: like SDRAM, DDR is also synchronous with the system bus frequency, but because of double data transmission, so working at 133MHz DDR is equivalent to 266MHz SDRAM, so DDR266 is used to represent.
Tip: The operating frequency represents the maximum stable operating frequency of memory. For example, PC133 standard SDRAM operates at 133MHz and DDR266 DDR operates at 266MHz.
For memory, the higher the frequency, the greater the bandwidth.
For example, the memory bandwidth of DDR 266 is 2100MB/s, so it is labeled with PC2100. DDR333 is PC2700, and DDR400 is PC3200.
Tip: Memory bandwidth, also known as "data transfer rate," refers to the amount of data passing through memory per unit of time, usually expressed in GB/s.
We use a short formula to explain the calculation method of memory bandwidth: memory bandwidth = working frequency × bit width /8×n(clock pulse up and down the transmission coefficient, DDR coefficient is 2).
DDR memory chips are today's mainstream memory products because of their low cost and excellent performance.
Obsolete aristocracy - RDRAM
RDRAM(memory bus dynamic random access memory) is a new type of DRAM developed by Rambus.
RDRAM has a much higher clock frequency, although its bit width is narrower than the 64bit of SDRAM and DDR.
From the appearance, RDRAM memory strip is similar to SDRAM and DDR SDRAM memory strip.
Technically, RDRAM is a relatively advanced memory, but due to its high price, it is not practical to popularize it in the market.
Today, RDRAM is out of the desktop market.
