Types of Printheads
Thermal Printheads — Direct Thermal (DT) & Thermal Transfer (TT)
How it Works: A linear array of tiny resistive heating elements heats either a heat-sensitive paper (DT) or a thermal-transfer ribbon (TT). Heat causes a chemical change in DT paper or melts ink from the ribbon onto the substrate.
Application: Barcode/label printers, receipt printers, shipping labels, asset tags.
Strengths: Simple, reliable, good for sharp barcodes and text, low maintenance.

Piezoelectric Printheads
How it Works: Many tiny channels on the piezoelectric printheads are subdivided and fixed on the print head. When voltage is applied, the piezoelectric crystal will deform slightly, allowing the ink to be squeezed out of the nozzle through the channel to form a print.
Application: Industrial and commercial inkjet printers.

Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) Printheads
How it Works: The ink is continuously ejected from a single nozzle under pressure, and after crystal oscillation, ink dots are formed. These ink dots are charged and deflected by high voltage, and then scanned on the surface of a moving object to form words.
Applications: Ideal for high-speed and continuous printing, commonly used in industrial coding and marking applications.

Drop-on-Demand (DOD) Printheads
How it Works: DOD print heads are mainly composed of high-precision valves or piezoelectric ceramic crystals. In valve-type DOD print heads, the valves open and close quickly, and the ink is ejected by the constant internal pressure to form characters or graphics.
Applications: This is common in various printing technologies, including inkjet, where the droplets are selectively deposited to create the desired image.
