Can it print without a ribbon?

Yes. Direct thermal mode uses heat-sensitive media and needs no ribbon; thermal transfer mode requires a ribbon and is normally chosen when the label needs greater resistance to abrasion, heat or chemicals.
Is 203 dpi enough for small barcodes?

203 dpi is the published resolution of the TE244. If your labels carry very small text or dense 2D codes, evaluate the 300 dpi TE344 in the same published series; the two models also differ in maximum print length and speed.
Which connection should I plan for?

How do I confirm the right ribbon and printhead?
