Thermal paper is a special kind of fine paper that is covered in a material that, when heated locally, changes color. It is commonly provided in roll form and is also called an audit roll on occasion. It is used in thermal printers, particularly in inexpensive devices like adding machines, credit card terminals, cash registers, and small, lightweight portable printers.

The surface of the paper has a coating that changes color when heated over a certain temperature. The fundamental design of the printer is a transport mechanism that drags the thermal paper across a thermal dot matrix print head. The (very tiny) dots on the head warm up fast enough to imprint, then cool almost as quickly.

The majority of thermal paper coatings turn black when heated; however, multicolored and blue-or red-colored coatings are occasionally used. Coffee mugs are one example of an unintentional heat source that can discolor paper and obscure any printing. You could leave a mark on the paper if you quickly rub your fingertip across it and cause enough friction to generate heat.
