The ribbon's rear coat side is shiny, while the other is its ink side. Always ensure that the ink side of a ribbon is in touch with substrates and the rear side is in contact with the print head while loading a ribbon.
Use ribbons that are just a little bit wider than the label stock at all times. When printing, a ribbon that is too wide may wrinkle. Too narrow results in a white wear mark on the print head, which damages the print head.
There is always a combination of the printer, setting, label stock, and ribbon when it comes to thermal transfer printing. Verify that the printer is in good working order, that appropriate labels and ribbon are being used, and that the printing speed, temperature, and pressure settings are correct. For instance, if the temperature setting is too low, you won't obtain a good image, and if it's too high, the film will burn, which is bad for the print head. The ideal temperature setting for the print head's lifetime is one that is just hot enough to produce a decent image.
