What to consider before buying a barcode printer

Investing in bar code printers is an easy way to increase productivity and reduce indirect costs. The barcode eliminates manual price entry, reduces human error, and reduces training costs. The cost of each label is only a few cents. These printers are specifically designed to print labels that can be easily attached to products and packaging. Before buying, you need to consider the following points:

size

There are two sizes of barcode printers, desktop version and industrial version. Desktop printers are smaller and can be placed on a desk, with label widths ranging from 2 inches to 6 inches. These are suitable for many applications such as manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and logistics.

Resolution

Resolution refers to the clarity of the image after printing. The first step is to determine what to print. The 203 dpi regular resolution printer is ideal for printing most bar codes and shipping labels. If the bar codes are denser or you want to add graphics to the label, you need a higher resolution printer, 300 or 600 dpi. This will require a higher resolution printer.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer

After determining your basic needs, you need to choose between a thermal printer or a thermal transfer printer.

Direct heating

This type of printer does not use toner, ink, or ribbon to place the image on the label. The image is transferred when the print head is heated, and then the image is transferred directly to the label. Thermal printers are ideal for printing temporary barcodes such as receipts and shipping labels. It is not ideal for barcodes that need to last longer (more than 6 months). Exposure to high temperature or sunlight and aging can cause the label to turn yellow and fade over time.

Heat transfer

Thermal transfer printers provide longer lasting and clear images on labels and materials. This version uses a thermal print head to heat the ribbon to melt the ink to the surface. The print quality is higher, the duration is longer, and it can be printed on a wider surface. If you need color printing or have denser barcodes or graphics, this is also a good choice.
