When you use your printer frequently, you may notice that certain ink cartridges are replaced more frequently than others. The choices you make about color toner use can have financial and professional consequences. Learn which ink colors are most commonly used.
What color ink is most commonly used? Why?
There's no doubt about it: black is by far the most commonly used ink color. Almost all text in printed documents uses black ink, and many documents that do not contain color figures (such as research papers) may use only black ink. You may not realize that color printers often mix other colors with black for a richer look.
After black, red tends to be the most commonly used color and is made using a magenta ink cartridge mixed with other colors. Cyan and yellow tend to be the least used ink cartridges in printers.

Learn about composite colors
The world of vibrant colors you get in your printer is created using just four inks: black, magenta, cyan and yellow. They are mixed in various ways to create colors such as green, brown, purple and red. It's called a "composite color," or a color created by combining other colors.
How to store color toner
We know you probably use black ink much more frequently than the other three colors. You already know you'll be replacing this cartridge more often, so it can help you keep your black ink available. If you want to save color toner (magenta, cyan, and yellow), you can go into the printer settings on your computer and tell your system not to mix other colors with black when printing text. Just choose the option that only uses black ink.
Toner color selection and quality
However, if you choose to reduce the use of color in your prints, be aware that this may affect the quality of the finished product. Your printer will undoubtedly use less color ink when you print in black and grayscale, but this may make your printouts look less clear or even faded or difficult to read. For drafts that only you will view (perhaps for proofreading purposes), choosing to use a sole black color is often the best option.
If you want the best quality, allow your printer to use full color, even if your document is only black and white. It will ensure you get the boldest, most precise and clearest images your printer can produce.
